How to Choose a wedding photographer
Making an educated decision
You’re newly engaged (congratulations!) and about to make some HUGE decisions! But, you’ve heard the horror stories and do not want to be one of the multitude of people who have been severely dissatisfied after receiving their long-awaited wedding photos. How disheartening when a once in a lifetime event is not documented beautifully. This is definitely not what you had hoped for and likely leads to some lasting grief and disappointment! Common complaints I’ve heard include stories of photos that have overly orange tones which lead to unflattering skin tones, dark images, overly exposed images and an abundance of blurry photos. I do NOT want that to happen to you! So, as a wedding photographer myself, who prioritizes client satisfaction, I’ve gathered together my suggestions on how to avoid this terrible heartache!
No doubt, choosing the right photographer for your wedding is a very important decision. Below are my top 7 suggestions how to confidently determine choosing the right photographer for your upcoming wedding:
1) Photography Style
Begin by aligning the photographer’s style with your taste and vision. Photography styles can vary significantly, including light and airy, dark and moody, vintage, and more. Examine their portfolio to see if the images resonate with your preferences. Do you prefer bright and soft photographs that evoke a romantic feel, or are you leaning towards something more dramatic and artistic? It's essential that their style reflects the atmosphere you wish to create on your wedding day.
2) Movement
Consider the type of movement you want captured on your wedding day. Do you envision a photography style that focuses on candid moments with lots of movement, or do you prefer traditional stand-and-smile poses? Some photographers excel at documenting the natural flow of the day, while others may focus on staged portraits. Think about your comfort level with being posed versus your desire for spontaneous shots, as this will significantly influence the outcome of your wedding album.
3) Personality
The personality of your photographer is equally important. On your wedding day, it’s actually possible to spend more time with your photographer than with your spouse, especially during preparations. It’s vital to choose someone whose vibe matches yours—someone who is personable, friendly, and easy to talk to. Look for a photographer who can also be a calming presence amid the hustle and bustle of the day. A strong connection can lead to more authentic and relaxed photos, capturing genuine emotions.
4) Opportunities to connect
Before settling on a photographer, see if there are opportunities to connect over a phone call, in person or meet via a Zoom call. Discussing your vision and expectations beforehand can establish rapport and ensure compatibility. Additionally, consider booking an engagement sessions with your potential wedding photogapher. This not only gives you a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera but also allows you to assess the photographer’s style and give you the confidence you need as you approach the big day.
5) What is Included
Clarify what is included in the package. Different photographers offer varying services and products, so it’s essential to know what you will receive for your investment. Consider what is most important to you: digital images, prints, albums, engagement pictures, or even a highlight video. Be sure to discuss these details upfront and ask about any additional costs or add-ons that may not be included in the initial package.
6) Portfolio Evaluation
Evaluating a wedding photographer's portfolio is crucial in making an informed decision. Follow them on Instagram or Facebook. A portfolio showcases a photographer's style, skill, and experience, providing insight into their creative vision. When reviewing a wedding portfolio, consider the consistency of quality, composition, and use of light in the images. It's also important to look for a variety of shots, including candid moments, posed portraits, and details of the wedding day. This diversity indicates the photographer's ability to capture different elements and emotions throughout the event. By assessing their portfolio, couples can ensure that the photographer's aesthetic aligns with their vision for their wedding, ultimately leading to a more personalised and memorable collection of images.
7) Values
Having a wedding photographer who aligns with your moral values is essential because they play a crucial role in capturing the essence of the day. Weddings are not just events; they are significant ceremonies where friends and family come together to celebrate the vows shared, love and commitment. When a photographer shares your values, they can approach the event with a genuine understanding of its importance, respect the emotions involved, and thoughtfully document the moments that truly matter to you.
